Adjustment Disorder Q & A

What is an adjustment disorder?

An adjustment disorder is an acute mental health condition that causes an excessive reaction to stressful or traumatic situations. You may develop an adjustment disorder from a single stressor (loss of a relationship) or multiple stressors (e.g., work problems, financial problems).

An adjustment disorder is also known as situational depression. It’s a common condition, affecting 2-8% of people in the United States.

What causes an adjustment disorder?

Many conditions may lead to an adjustment disorder. In most cases, the mental health condition occurs when you’re struggling with a situation you perceive as excessively stressful.

That includes negative and positive stressors such as loss of a job, having a baby, dealing with financial issues, or retirement. Your personality, life experiences, and family history may play a role in the development of an adjustment disorder.

What are the symptoms of an adjustment disorder?

Symptoms of an adjustment disorder vary from person to person and can range from mild to severe. Common symptoms include:

  • Insomnia
  • Feeling overly tired but unable to sleep
  • Body aches
  • Heart palpitations
  • Feeling anxious or trapped
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Easily crying
  • Withdrawal from friends or family
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Misusing drugs or alcohol
  • Thoughts of suicide

An adjustment disorder may co-occur with other mental health conditions like depression or anxiety.
