Sleep Disorders Q & A

What are sleep disorders?

Sleep disorders are conditions that affect your ability to get an adequate amount of high-quality sleep, leading to daytime sleepiness that affects your physical and mental well-being.

There are many types of sleep disorders, including:

Insomnia

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that makes it hard to fall asleep or stay asleep. It may last a few days, weeks, or months.

Sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder where you stop and restart breathing several times during the night while you sleep.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS)

RLS causes an intense prickling feeling in your legs while you’re relaxed, triggering an intense need to move your legs.

Hypersomnia

Hypersomnia is the inability to stay awake during the day. Narcolepsy is a type of hypersomnia.

Circadian rhythm disorders

Circadian rhythm disorders affect your normal sleep-wake cycle, making it hard for you to sleep and wake up at the right times.

Parasomnia

Parasomnia is a sleep disorder that causes undesirable physical events when you’re sleeping, like sleepwalking or sleep eating.

Though sleep disorders make you feel tired during the day, not everyone with daytime fatigue has a sleep disorder. If you’re feeling sleepy during the day, you may not be getting enough sleep. Most adults need about seven to nine hours of sleep a night.

What causes sleep disorders?

You can develop a sleep disorder from any number of causes. However, it’s common for people with mental health conditions to have problems sleeping. Mental health conditions that might affect sleep include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Trauma-related disorders
  • Panic disorder
  • Adjustment disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Dementia
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Your risk of developing a sleep disorder increases as you get older. Older adults may not get enough sleep or enough deep, restful sleep.

What types of treatments help a sleep disorder?

Mr. Darden takes an integrated approach to care. He customizes your sleep disorder treatment plan based on the type of sleep disorder you have and the underlying cause. Treatment may include lifestyle changes, therapy, medication management, or a combination of these.

Lifestyle changes

Mr. Darden works with you, helping you make lifestyle changes to improve your sleep habits. Lifestyle changes may include avoiding caffeine too close to bedtime and reading a book before bed (instead of watching TV or your tablet).

Therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for sleep disorders like insomnia. Psychotherapy may be recommended based on each individual circumstance.

Medication management

When necessary, Mr. Darden may also prescribe medication to improve your quality of sleep.
